WHERE HEAVEN & EARTH KISS:
EMBRACING OPPOSITES

Our conflictual thoughts, feelings and behaviors often weave a darkened cast into the fabric of our lives. In this workshop we give voice to our opposing interests by making images with poetry, prose and art, to give value to both perspectives and to allow for a third option to appear. If we consider our disruptive opposites each as a circle, and then over overlap the circles we create a place of new possibility. We find we have accessed an ancient mystery—a place “where heaven and earth kiss,” a place that holds the synthesis of our polarities, mirrored in the ancient symbol of the mandorla, an almond shape that results when two circles overlap, which depicts the union of apparent opposites.  The mandorla symbolizes the interaction and interdependence of opposing worlds and forces.

We will explore the nature of this in-between space in our own lives and the conflicted areas we are dealing with. If we deny one of the opposites, the circles do not intersect and we are polarized, out of balance. Expressing unity and the harmony of opposites, the mandorla expresses the perspective of the mystics, and is thought to be older than both Christianity and Buddhism, which both portrayed this holy symbol in their imagery.
